Dung beetle functions in tropical planted pastures were barely explained by management variables and not at all by community metrics

چکیده
Studies comparing different land covers clearly show that land-use change commonly affects animal communities and the ecological functions they play in ecosystems. However, we lack a good understanding of effects more subtle changes, those occurring within cover type, can have on animals, if these are also mediated by shifts community attributes. We studied two important dung beetles tropical planted pastures with exotic African grasses. Due to differences management, varied grass cover, tree density, pasture age, cattle application frequency veterinary medical products. sampled their 24 sites address questions: (1) Do management variables known strongly affect beetle functions?; (2) Are beetle-mediated removal soil excavation correlated, influenced attributes? found no influence removal, while was negatively affected but only weakly. Contrary our expectations, attribute correlated either or excavation, both were positively each other. Our results indicate responses changes decoupled, idiosyncratic context-dependent, making predictions generalizations difficult. believe there is need studies investigating fine-scale habitats better understand consequences decisions processes animals.

Dung beetle movements at two spatial scales
To understand the dynamics of spatially structured populations, we need to know the level of movements at different spatial scales. This paper reports on Aphodius dung beetle movements at two scales: movements between dung pats within pastures, and movements between pastures. First, I test an assumption common to many recent models of spatially structured populations – that the probability of a...
متن کاملVariegated tropical landscapes conserve diverse dung beetle communities
BACKGROUND Conserving biodiversity in tropical landscapes is a major challenge to scientists and conservationists. Current rates of deforestation, fragmentation, and land use intensification are producing variegated landscapes with undetermined values for the conservation of biological communities and ecosystem functioning. Here, we investigate the importance of tropical variegated landscapes t...
متن کاملTrait-dependent response of dung beetle populations to tropical forest conversion at local and regional scales.
Comparative analyses that link information on species' traits, environmental change, and organism response have rarely identified unambiguous trait correlates of vulnerability. We tested if species' traits could predict local-scale changes in dung beetle population response to three levels of forest conversion intensity within and across two biogeographic regions (the Neotropics and Afro-Eurasi...
متن کاملEffect of dung burial by the dung beetle Bubas bison on numbers and viability of Cryptosporidium oocysts in cattle dung.
Cryptosporidium oocysts were inoculated into fresh dung (∼1.2×10(4) oocysts per gram wet weight) and fed to dung beetles to assess the effect of dung burial by the dung beetle Bubas bison on the distribution of the oocysts in small cores of soil in the laboratory. The experiment consisted of five replicates of each of two treatments; controls (dung but no dung beetles) and the experimental trea...
متن کاملA 'metaphising' dung beetle.
You may have seen the film Microcosmos, produced in 1996 by the French biologists Claude Nuridsany and Marie Perrenou. It does not star humans, but much smaller creatures, mostly insects. The filmmakers’ magnifying camera transposes the viewer into the world of these organisms. For me, Microcosmos is not an ordinary naturalist documentary; it is an exercise in metaphysics. One sequence in the f...
